We survived the first month of the year and the first diehards have already been spotted wearing three-quarter length trousers. We would like to say to those people: maybe think twice before going outside this week. Snow may fall again during this week, which could also remain. And because we are not a weather station but a car medium: this could also cause problems on the road.
It is a weather station Weatheronline, where meteorologist Wouter van Bernebeek shares his winter forecast. According to Van Bernebeek, a large amount of rain is expected tonight and tomorrow. “Inland, up to 15 to 20 millimeters of precipitation is possible regionally until Wednesday morning,” he writes. A day later, colder air from Northern Europe blows into our country. As a result, it may freeze in the northeast of the country during the night from Wednesday to Thursday.
No slippery conditions predicted on the road, but be careful
According to Van Bernebeek, the freezing cold does not make for smooth asphalt. “The roads are still quite warm, so there is little or no slipperiness yet,” he says. But a new layer of precipitation is coming our way on Thursday morning. “In the center and south, rain falls immediately: again, this can cause approximately 15 millimeters in the wettest places,” the meteorologist writes. Thanks to a strong wind, it also immediately feels colder.
Up in the country the air is still a bit colder, which should be enough for winter precipitation. “There are quite a few weather maps that currently calculate snowfall for those regions,” says Van Bernebeek. There could easily be 1 to 3 centimeters of snow this week. The mercury remains above freezing, but the snow can still remain. “Once it snows hard enough, it can easily turn white in such a situation,” said the weatherman.
On the road you will experience little inconvenience from the snow, he thinks. 'That is partly because the subsurface is quite warm. Yet a white world is not excluded as long as the snowfall continues long enough. The same applies to the risk of slippery conditions,” he warns.
Be especially careful in the north
You have to be careful, especially in the province of Groningen. The rest of the country does not have to take snowfall much into account – there winter precipitation is 'virtually excluded'. So there's a good chance that you won't get anything from the snow. After these few cold days it will quickly warm up. In the south the temperature can even rise to 15 degrees.
