The President of the Czech Republic, Milos Zeman, reacted this Thursday to Russia’s attack on Ukraine asking to “isolate the madman”, referring to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, whom in the past he had sometimes shown his admiration.

“You have to isolate the madman”, said the Czech president in a televised message to the nation in which accused Russia of having committed “a crime against peace”and where he showed “full support for Ukraine, its government and its people”.
In his speech, Zeman recalled that a few days ago he did not believe in this invasion and even questioned the professionalism of the US intelligence services that warned of the attack.

“This irrational decision by the Russian leadership is going to cause considerable damage to the Russian state,” said the veteran politician, who until now has been a supporter of economic diplomacy with Russia.
Zeman was the only head of state of the European Union in participate in the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II in Moscow in 2015, when Russia had already annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, something that the Czech president described as “inevitable”.

What’s more, the president has defended Russia in the open diplomatic conflict with Prague last year when Czech intelligence services reported that Russian agents sabotaged two ammunition depots in the country in 2014.
