Have you ever wondered Who subscribes to the most popular video game services? Let’s talk about the various Xbox Game Pass, Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus and all the others. Now there is an answer, at least from a demographic point of view. According to the company Newzoo and its Global Gamer Study, the majority of subscribers come from Western marketsi (North America, Europe and Australasia) and are mainly men (62%) aged between 21 and 35 (42%).
You won’t be surprised to know that they are gamers. In fact, 52% of subscribers consider video games to be their favorite hobby. 34% spend more than six hours a week with their consoles, while 32% spend the same time playing on PC.
Savings question?
Generally speaking, subscribers to these services were already gamers and spent an average of $5 to $25 a month on video games. It may seem paradoxical to you, but subscribers have a higher income level (43%) than non-subscribers (34%). The values to be considered in relation to income vary country by country (in the USA it is those with an income exceeding 100,000 dollars per year).
In short, Savings and excellent value for money are not the main reasons to subscribe to the various Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, Nintendo Switch Online and others. According to Newzoo: “The potential cost savings may not be enough to justify membership for those with lower incomes.”
In any case, those with low incomes see saving as the main reason for subscribing, together with “enjoying the online features” of games (as you know, on consoles it is mandatory to subscribe to the services of hardware manufacturers in order to play online). Access to online it is the second most important reason for medium (between $50,000 and $100,000 a year) and high income players. However, these latter income groups have an even stronger reason for subscribing, namely the “convenience of trying new games instead of purchasing them individually”. The percentage of this motivation increases as income increases (30%, 35% and 38%, respectively).
