Hema sells its bakeries to BACU, a company based in Uden that also supplies bread and pastries to Jumbo. BACU takes over the bakeries in Almere, Sneek, Zwolle, Doetinchem, Dordrecht and Helmond from Hema.
According to the store chain, the 250 employees of the bakeries will keep their jobs and nothing will change for the customer. “Our pastries, including the tompouces, will still be made by the same people. And of course according to the same recipe,” said a Hema spokesperson.
Before the takeover by the Van Eerd family (owner of Jumbo) and investor Parcom, Hema had been looking for a new owner for the bakeries for some time. This led to a lot of unrest among the staff, in 2019 work in the bakery in Almere was stopped due to the uncertain future.
Closely linked
According to Hema boss Saskia Egas Reparaz, that future is now clear. “The bakeries will be given a different owner, but as a supplier to Hema they will remain closely linked to our brand. In this way, the craftsmanship of the bakeries can be better utilized and we can focus better on the sale of products.”
During the negotiations for the acquisition of Hema, Jumbo provided the acquiring parties (Van Eerd and Parcom) with a loan of 50 million euros, with the bakeries serving as collateral. This loan can be repaid by selling the bakery.
BACU from Uden is a family bakery that is over 100 years old. It is now an industrial company where about 550 employees work every day to supply 700 Jumbo supermarkets with bread and pastries. The Hema takeover creates one of the largest bakeries in the Netherlands. The amount of money involved in the acquisition has not been disclosed.
