Helsinki-Vantaa|There is no need to come to the airport any earlier than normal, assures Finavia.
The summary is made by artificial intelligence and checked by a human.
Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is operating normally after Thursday morning’s disturbance.
The failure of the baggage system was caused by a communication component.
About 200 suitcases are still waiting to be transported to their owners.
According to Finavia, an external entity could not access the system.
All the systems are working normally at Helsinki-Vantaa airport after the luggage chaos on Thursday morning, assures Finavia’s deputy director Jani Elasmaa. The airport was heavily congested early Thursday morning due to a malfunction in the baggage system.
“We have identified the cause of the problem with certainty and are testing the system,” says Elasmaa. According to current information, it seems that the fault was in the communication component.
As far as passengers are concerned, however, everything works normally. According to Elasmaa, there is currently, for example, no reason why air passengers should arrive at the airport earlier than the airlines usually recommend.
“The operation of the field has been completely normal since yesterday.”
Risk According to Elasmaa, there is currently little risk of the problem returning or becoming the same as yesterday, because the cause has been located.
“If a similar fault were to occur immediately, the cause would probably be the same. Now we have a way to answer it in minutes.”
According to Elasmaa, there are no indications that an outside party has gained access to the system. The fault was therefore not caused by, for example, a denial of service attack.
All however, the bags have not yet reached their owners’ destinations. Elasmaa says that around 200 bags are still circulating at the airport. According to him, none of the bags is completely lost, but it is known where each one should be transported.
“Airlines are from yesterday [torstain] and during the night got a very large part of the luggage forward.”
On Thursday, it was estimated that thousands of pieces of luggage could be left on flights.
At airports around the world it is regularly announced that suitcases must not be left unattended. So would it have been possible for an outside bag to have ended up in Thursday’s pile of bags?
No, says Elasmaa.
“The bags in the departure hall were under quite a few pairs of eyes: our own staff and security resources.”
A police patrol also visited the airport.
“In addition to that, it is possible to keep an eye on these with various technological means,” adds Elasmaa.
According to Elasmaa, it is also not possible that the suspicious luggage could have ended up on the plane from the piles. All suitcases are screened before they are moved to the hold.
