Helsinki-Vantaa|Finnair will delay some of its flights on Thursday so that passengers can get on the planes, says Suvi Aaltonen, the airline’s communications manager.
Finavian assistant director Jani Elasmaa confirms to HS that the failure of the luggage system at Helsinki-Vantaa airport was an IT problem, not a physical component or something like that, for example.
Helsinki–Vantaa airport was heavily congested in the morning due to a technical malfunction in the baggage delivery system.
“The fault is still being investigated,” Elasmaa, reached by phone, said on Thursday morning around 10:30.
To Elasmaan according to so far, nothing indicates that it was, for example, a denial of service attack.
“The root cause has been determined and we have different lines of investigation, but none of them point to any kind of cyber attack,” he said.
According to Elasmaa, all luggage that got stuck at the airport during the morning has now been forwarded to the sorting system. He continued that the disruption that started early in the morning, however, had time to affect several thousand passengers whose luggage was left on their flights.
“Finavia apologizes for the inconvenience and trouble caused to passengers,” Elasmaa said.
Communications Manager Suvi Aaltonen On Thursday morning, Finnair said that information about the cause of the problem that caused the congestion has not reached Finnair.
“We are prepared to delay some of Finnair’s departing flights in order to get customers on board,” he said.
However, for the time being, luggage will be left behind on most flights.
“They will be delivered to customers as soon as possible, once the fault has been fixed,” Aaltonen said.
Former editor of HS in Helsinki-Vantaa Saara Aholainen told around 11:30 in the morning, that the baggage lines are in operation again.
According to Aaltonen, it is currently impossible to estimate the amount of luggage left on flights.
“The amount ultimately depends on how long the problem continues. In any case, we are talking about hundreds or even thousands of pieces of luggage”, Aaltonen stated.
