Helldivers 2 sold a lot in its first twelve weeks, Sony reveals

On the occasion of its financial report for the last quarter of the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024, Sony revealed the sales data of the cooperative third-person shooter Helldivers 2which between PS5 and PC it sold 12 million copies. The data is updated as of May 5, 2024 and refers to the first twelve weeks on the market of the Arrowhead Game Studios game, which was published on February 8 simultaneously on both platforms.

It should be noted that PlayStation in this case is only the publisher of the game, while Arrowhead remains an independent reality, despite having published its latest titles with Sonygranting them exclusively to its consoles.

Excellent results

According to what was explained by the interim CEO of SIE Hiroki Totoki, who will be such until May 31st, to then give way to the two new CEOs, Hermen Hulst and Hideaki Nishino, Helldivers 2 has surpassed the sales speed record previously held to God of War Ragnarok. Of course we are talking about records for comparable periods of time. On the other hand it is fair to specify that God of War Ragnarok was and is sold to a higher price of Helldivers 2: €80 versus €40. Finally, Kratos’ latest adventure was only released on PS5, when the installed base of the console was much lower than the current one (we are talking about the end of 2022). So the sales data of the two games are certainly comparable in a quantitative sense, but they must still be put into perspective.

That said, Helldivers 2 achieved the best result ever for a PlayStation game on PC and was a major contributor to the fourth quarter results of the company’s last fiscal year. Unfortunately, Sony did not explode the sales data, revealing how many copies were made on PS5 and how many on PC.

At this point it remains to be seen whether the recent turbulence experienced by Helldivers 2, due to Sony’s attempt to force PC users to register a PSN account, an attempt which it must be said failed miserably, has affected sales and will have repercussions in the long run period. Given Steam’s return to the global top 10 on a permanent basis, for now it seems like not.
