As we have already told you, the online shooter Helldivers 2 has a “Dungeon Master” behind him, or a developer (named Joel) which has the power to insert some small changes into the balance of games, for example giving supplies to enemies or making life easier for players if a certain challenge is too difficult. Now, let's discover new details about this increasingly infamous figure, on the occasion of 10 million player deaths on planet Mort (which however was finally conquered).
The details come from Arrowhead Game Studios community manager, Baskinator. Via Discord, the woman was talking to players even on her day off. When it was pointed out to her that working too much is “not healthy,” she responded:
“Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. One of the reasons I love talking about Game Master Joel with everyone here is that he's as dedicated to the community as I am. We love this place and the players who spend their time there. In fact, I'll share with you this little gem… When what happened on Mort happened, Joel texted me in which he told me it was a 'beautiful thing'. I know people struggle to accept the idea of a human being running the campaign instead of an unfeeling computer, but I'd take a human any day.”
Is Joel cruel to Helldivers 2 players?
In another comment, Baskinator commented on the growing reputation of Joel who, hopefully jokingly, is considered cruel and guilty of the fall of Malevelon Creek. “I think it's unfair that some journalists talk about the GM saying he works against the players,” he said. “That's not really the best way to think about it. It's more likely that he's trying to respond to players' natural pushes in certain areas and raise or lower the challenge, depending on how he reads the data.”
In short, Joel's purpose is to make your games more fun by creating the right balance.
