On January 30, 1984, ten years after the publication of “The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum,” I wrote a letter to Heinrich Böll as a young editor. I was just as curious as a school class from Hamburg who had turned to him to hear from Heinrich Böll how he imagined the lives of the criminal Katharina Blum, whom he had invented, and the Bundeswehr deserter Ludwig Götten would continue after their time in prison.
