February is not only supposed to be cold, but also wet. Old women's carnival is therefore more or less a failure in some parts of Germany.
Frankfurt – Actually, only April is so changeable: While the temperatures in Germany at the start of February were more reminiscent of spring, it gets cooler again in the middle of the month. In the meantime, heavy rain and occasional snow are expected, which is due to the air mass limit in the center of the country. According to the weather forecast by meteorologist Dominik Jung, the risk of flooding will increase there in the next few days.
Weather forecast for Germany announces “wet” Old Women’s Carnival
Contrary to the last weather forecast, it will remain a short winter interlude, which will hardly go into sub-zero temperatures. It is true that “heavy snowfall, wet snowfall and sleet” can occur around the air mass boundaries. However, winter fans shouldn't hope for too much because, according to Jung, all that's left is “mud mess”. “It's getting cooler, but it's not really going to be wintery,” explains the meteorologist wetter.net
Also the weather forecast weather.com indicates cold weather phases. In addition, an “above-average distribution of precipitation” is expected in the Alps and in the low mountain ranges. Jung confirms the wet front, which could particularly affect the carnival strongholds in North Rhine-Westphalia in the next few days. “It will probably be a very wet affair on Indian Thursday,” he says.
According to the weather forecast, the air mass limit will cause rain and cold
From Wednesday (February 7th) there will be rain and snow in the center of the country. The air mass limit is “at the start,” said the meteorologist. The following day, low single-digit temperatures are expected in northern Germany, while it will remain relatively mild in the south. On Friday the air masses are expected to shift to the north. As a result, precipitation is also expected in the north at this point at the latest.
It should be in Lower Saxony, Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Brandenburg and until Friday afternoon Hesse Rain 50 to 70 liters per square meter. “The river levels will rise noticeably again,” said Jung. The risk of flooding is increasing. From Saturday onwards, the weather forecast predicts milder temperatures again. From Rose Monday (February 12th) it will be very mixed with maximum temperatures between six and eleven degrees.
Weather forecast says February will be too warm
At the start of February, however, there was less rain and higher temperatures. “The Polar Express still seems to be late or has been overtaken by the Canary Islands ICE,” said Jung in his weather forecast, adding: “Because the temperatures are clearly too mild for the time of year.” Accordingly, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen 17.3 degrees, 16.3 degrees in Oberstdorf and 13.3 degrees in Munich.
The meteorologist explains that the temperatures at the beginning of the month are “much too high for the current season”. In some cities and towns in Germany, the highest lowest temperatures in February since weather records began were recorded on Monday (February 5th). Jung lists:
locality | Low temperature in February |
Andernach | 11.8 degrees |
Aschersleben-Mehringen | 11.5 degrees |
Piding | 11.4 degrees |
Quedlinburg | 11.4 degrees |
Bad Kohlgrub | 11.1 degrees |
Bernburg (Saale) | 11.1 degrees |
Lingen (Baccum) | 10.8 degrees |
Waltrop-Abdinghof | 10.6 degrees |

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also considers the month to be too warm. “The fact remains: February is calculated to be one or two degrees too warm,” explains Jung of the NOAA weather model. This makes it the third winter month in a row that is milder than in the years 1991 to 2020.
It remains to be seen whether the predicted onset of winter will occur. The European weather model predicts lower temperatures, but Jung sticks to it: “Nothing is certain yet.” (cln)
