The number of missing is 41
At least 165 people have died and dozens are unaccounted for in India and Nepal due to heavy flooding in recent days in both countries.
In Nepal, which has suffered numerous landslides, 101 deaths and 41 disappearances have been reported so far, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior, which has warned that the figure exceeds the number of fatalities detected after the first month of the monsoon rainy season this year, when 61 people died.
This week’s rainfall has been attributed to cyclonic conditions in the Bay of Bengal, on the east coast of India. The trend, according to the authorities, has been increasing after July and the death toll is expected to continue to rise.
Of the total number of deaths registered, at least 60 have occurred in Province 1, while another 31 have taken place in the province of Sudurpaschim, as indicated by a Police spokesperson to the newspaper ‘The Kathmandu Post’.
Likewise, some 40 people have been injured, most of them in the aforementioned provinces, which are the most affected in the country by these monsoon rains. The rescue teams have launched a series of search efforts in the area.
At the moment, the Government estimates that more than 2,200 homes have been seriously flooded, while 1,177 families have had to leave their homes. “The Police are coordinating with various local Ga agencies to relocate families who have been displaced,” said Basanta Bahadur Kunwar, Police spokesman.
India exceeds 60 deaths from rains
In India, on the other hand, the death toll from the heavy rains registered this week has risen to 64. Among the deceased – all registered in the state of Uttarajand, in the north of the country – the majority have perished in the Nainital district, the most affected.
Information from the Indian government collected by the newspaper ‘The Times of India’ indicates that some 3,500 families have been rescued and more than 16,000 people have been evacuated to safer places in recent days.
On Thursday, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) highlighted that 1,300 people had been rescued from the most affected areas thanks to the deployment of almost twenty teams in Uttarajand. The authorities have reported that they are flying over the area to analyze the true situation on the ground.
