A New Jersey gym owner was sentenced to 41 months in prison on Wednesday for assaulting a police officer during the Capitol storming on January 6 this year. This was reported by international news agencies on Wednesday evening. The assault was recorded by the body cams those cops were wearing – at least the man had pushed and then beat a cop. It is the most severe sentence for a person involved in the Capitol storming to date.
The suspect had already pleaded guilty in August. He is the first suspect in the Capitol storming who has been convicted of violence against the police. More than 120 criminal cases follow against suspects charged with assaulting the police on January 6. About 140 police officers were injured in the attack on the government building in Washington DC, the capital of the United States. One police officer died the day after the storming.
The storm resulted in a total of about seven hundred criminal cases. The first Capitol stormer to be convicted was fined €500 and 120 hours of community service for breaking into the government building.
