London’s Heathrow airport will close the year with one million more passengers than estimated after confirming in its third quarter results the record numbers of travelers who passed through it in the summer.
In all of 2024, it expects 83.8 million people to pass through its halls, compared to a previous prediction that pointed to 82.8 million, it said on Wednesday when publishing its third quarter results. The accounts of Heathrow, of which Ferrovial is no longer the main shareholder, mark the summer of 2024 as the busiest period in its history; Between June and September more than 30 million passengers passed through it.
Among the events that occurred in the middle of the summer season, and to which the airport’s financial director, Sally Ding, attributes part of the visits in an interview with Bloombergthere is the tour of the American singer Taylor Swift, which, among other cities, stopped in London, or the Olympic Games held in Paris, which also increased traffic above usual.
The company currently does not foresee dividends for 2024 although he does not rule it out: “It is likely that this will be the case based on financial performance,” says Ding.
The increase in passenger volumes in the nine months to the end of September was due to an increase in commercial flights and load factors.
Apart from Africa and Latin America, all markets this year exceeded 2023 passenger traffic levels. The UK and Asia Pacific region recorded a double-digit increase in market growth despite airlines such as British Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airways eliminated some routes to China (which the Chinese companies absorbed) and reallocated the spaces to other profitable long-distance routes.
