There are some breeds more prone to heat stroke due to their characteristics, so knowing the preventive measures can help improve their quality of life
With the high temperatures of summer, we must not neglect the health of pets, quite the opposite. The heat can make them suffer from sunstroke, for which you must pay attention to the signs. In the case of dogs, the characteristics of each breed make them more or less prone to heat stroke, so it is advisable to know the preventive measures for each case and thus improve their quality of life.
In the first place, age is a factor that affects puppies and older ones to a greater extent, but other characteristics have a greater influence. The coat is essential: those with long hair, especially if it is black or very thick, will be more affected despite the thermoregulatory effect they may have. On the other hand, if they have short hair, they will suffer more solar radiation, so even if they get rid of the heat they can develop skin diseases or allergies. Finally, the type of skull is also remarkable, since brachycephalics (dogs with short heads and small windpipes) will have difficulty breathing in the heat.
Dogs have their own self-regulation strategies, but in extreme heat they can be overwhelmed and suffer from heat stroke. To detect it, it is necessary to pay attention to some factors:
– Increased panting abnormally.
– Notable increase in their temperature, especially in the groin area where they have less fur. If they are very hot, their temperature can reach 41 or 42 degrees, which poses a risk of high heat stroke.
– Dry nose, indicating dehydration.
Preventing canine heat stroke involves some very simple measures with which you can greatly alleviate their quality of life in the heat. Avoid going out in the hottest hours and always prefer cool and shady spaces. In addition, it is highly recommended to always carry water by hand and in no case leave your dog inside a car, due to the extreme temperatures that it can reach.
