“In Italy, cardiovascular diseases represent the leading cause of mortality and hospitalization, as well as one of the items with the greatest impact on health spending. This is an emergency destined to worsen with the progressive aging of the population which determines an increase in prevalence of cardiovascular chronicity. Addressing this challenge is a global emergency and requires an intersectoral and multidisciplinary strategy, starting with a strong investment in prevention activities. By adopting healthy lifestyles and undergoing appropriate checks, we can protect the heart and live in full health.” Thus the Undersecretary of Health Marcello Gemmato, in a message sent to the president of the National Association of hospital cardiologists Fabrizio Oliva, at the opening of the 55th Anmco National Congress, in Rimini from today until 18 May.
“It is therefore essential to move from an approach focused on the treatment of diseases to one increasingly oriented towards maintaining good heart health – explains Gemmato – With this awareness and in line with the National Prevention Plan 2020-2025, we are constantly committed to promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles, starting from physical activity and a balanced diet. It is one of the priorities of the Ministry of Health and of this Government: to encourage prevention to have fewer sick people in the future and thus guarantee health sustainability of the National Health Service. Together with the continuous valorisation of the healthcare personnel involved in our public healthcare on a daily basis, which we have tried to encourage from the first days of establishment with possible measures, first and foremost the renewal of the collective agreement and the fight against the aberrant phenomenon of token doctors”.
“Alongside the commitment to prevention and care, it is also important to support the research sector with targeted investments, which is crucial for improving the way in which we treat cardiac diseases, allowing us to intervene in the most appropriate way for each person for a precision medicine”, concludes the undersecretary.
