The burden of disease they cause, especially in people who are already in vulnerable conditions, cannot even be well estimated because there is no reliable data due to lack of research. However, it is estimated that there are more than one and a half million annually according to the WHO. In addition, fungal infections are increasing, more resistant to treatment and are expected to spread to more regions due to climate change. We discussed it with Dr. Óscar Franco.
