Mäkinen is receiving treatment at Siltasairaila’s intensive care unit. He tells HS that he is doing well considering the circumstances.
Mäkinen was watching the ice hockey match between Finland and Sweden when he started to feel pressure in his chest.
According to Mäkinen, after the match, the pain had become unbearable. He was alone at home
“That’s when I found myself lying on the floor. I had lost consciousness, luckily I woke up.”
Hilly called his son who lives nearby, who took his father to Peijas hospital. Even though Mäkinen got help quickly, he gives advice to others who have symptoms of an illness attack:
“Don’t you stupid men call a boy or a friend, but call the emergency number 112.”
Mäkinen also urges everyone to download the 112 application to their smartphone and place it on the first page of the screen.
in Peijas Mäkinen received first aid, after which he received an ambulance ride to Meilahti Hospital.
Mäkinen says that he had two ball enlargements in Meilahti. A pulsator was temporarily installed in his aorta to help the heart pump blood.
According to Mäkinen, the operations were performed under local anesthesia. He was conscious and could follow their progress.
“It’s like watching an American movie. All the doctors and nurses did their job efficiently and kept me informed of what was going on. The service was unbelievably good.”
Due to the pulsator, Mäkinen cannot move. He has been lying still since Friday. Mäkinen’s eating and drinking are also restricted. When there is fluid in the lungs and heart, fluid intake is limited to a minimum.
On Tuesday, Mäkinen is supposed to have a third ball extension. He praises the treatment he has received so far.
“This experience increases my appreciation for the Finnish welfare society.”
Hilly served as an MP of the coalition twice, in 2003–2004 and 2007–2015. He was the chairman of the Vantaa City Council in 2009–2017.
