This is a 50-year-old patient resident in Murcia who is in isolation, waiting for the National Center for Microbiology to confirm the positive
The Ministry of Health notified the Ministry of Health this Saturday of a new “probable case” of monkeypox in the Region of Murcia. This is a 50-year-old patient residing in the municipality of Murcia “who is currently isolated”, waiting for the Majadahonda National Microbiology Center to confirm the positive. The man was treated in health area I, whose referral hospital is La Arrixaca, with symptoms consistent with monkeypox. In addition to a clinic typical of this disease, there is also epidemiological suspicion. Hence, it has been classified as a “probable case”.
If confirmed, it would be the second case of monkey pox or ‘monkeypox’ recorded in the Region of Murcia. The first was detected on June 10 at the Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena, and corresponds to a man between 45 and 49 years old who is not a resident of the Community nor was he infected in the regional territory. In this second case, still to be confirmed, the origin of the contagion is under investigation by the Ministry’s Epidemiology service. According to THE TRUTH, the patient had not traveled outside the Region during the incubation period, which would point to a transmission within the Community.
The number of people affected by monkeypox in Spain now amounts to 1,196, according to the latest update from the Ministry of Health, published this Friday. The notified cases come from 16 autonomous communities: Madrid (770), Catalonia (151), Andalusia (118), Canary Islands (46), Basque Country (22), Balearic Islands (22), Valencian Community (18), Aragon (14) , Galicia (7), Asturias (7), Castilla La Mancha (7), Navarra (5), Castilla y León (3), Cantabria (3), Extremadura (2) and Region of Murcia (1).
1,185 of these patients are men, and 11 women. Age ranges from 3 to 67 years, with a median age of 37 years. Most cases are mild. Only 28 infected have required hospital admission, and no deaths have been recorded. Throughout Europe there are already more than 3,800 reported cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) is following the situation closely, although it has not yet declared an international health emergency. However, the appearance of some sporadic cases in children and the difficulties in stopping transmission chains are worrying. So far, “a high percentage of these cases” are occurring in men who have sex with men. From what is known so far, the virus is transmitted between people through direct contact with broken skin or through prolonged and close contact with respiratory secretions, and hence the chains of transmission of the virus are linked above all to sexual intercourse. .
Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease that was until now localized in central and western Africa. Since May, however, outbreaks have been detected in Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom, among other countries, and cases continue to rise.
The Ministry of Health reiterated this Saturday a “call for calm, since the regional health system is prepared to deal with this pathology, as well as for its diagnosis, control and epidemiological monitoring.”
