An American patient, who suffered from HIV and leukemia, has been free of the AIDS virus for 14 months despite the fact that she stopped receiving antiretrovirals. It had only happened on two other occasions, in two men, but it is the first time it has happened in a woman. The patient received a stem cell transplant to treat her cancer, but the transplant, from a donor naturally immune to HIV, ended up eliminating the presence of the virus. We explain the news with Dr. Óscar Franco.
