The third case of flu covid-19 syndrome related to the Delta variant, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, was identified by the Municipal Health Department, after genomic sequencing. According to the secretariat, the infected woman is a 72-year-old woman with comorbidities, resident of the Campo Grande neighborhood, in the west of the capital, who developed a mild flu-like illness and is now cured. The secretariat did not say how she got infected, if it was in the city or if she had contact with someone from outside or if she traveled.
Secretary Daniel Soranz said that the World Health Organization (WHO) has already informed that the Delta variant will be the predominant variant in the world, it already circulates in more than 100 countries and where there was a record of its presence, the number of covid cases rose rapidly. -19.
“Here in Brazil there are two discussions, whether it will manage to overcome the P.1 variant, this is an important discussion and also whether, in fact, it is less lethal and causes fewer serious cases. We already know that it has the ability to transmit much faster than the others”, he said.
Before this third case, two others were identified, in 27- and 30-year-old men. One lives in the Olaria neighborhood, but works in Vila Isabel, and the other in Ilha de Paquetá, a neighborhood in the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the northeast of Guanabara Bay. Both cases were of community transmission, that is, within the city itself.
An average of 20 contacts are being monitored for each infected. The secretariat informed, in a note, that the epidemiological investigation of the three cases continues and the Health Surveillance “continues to carry out the epidemiological monitoring of the pandemic in the city and, together with the State Department of Health and Fiocruz, monitor the entry of different strains”.
The recommendation of the Municipal Health Department is that regardless of the variant, preventive measures are the same. “The population must keep their distance, wear masks and sanitize their hands with alcohol 70 or, when possible, soap and water; in addition to the other measures to protect life established in Joint Resolution SES/SMS No. 871 of 12/01/21, which can be consulted at https://coronavirus.rio”.
Data from the secretariat indicate that in the last week 48 new cases of different variants of the virus were identified in the city. Among them, in 37 city residents. Since the first case of new variants, the municipality counts 772, with 636 residents. In addition to the two Delta cases, there are 622 cases for Gamma (P.1) and 12 for Alpha (B.1.1.7). Of the residents infected by these strains, 44 died, 18 remain hospitalized and 574 are already considered cured. Of the non-Rio residents infected by the variants, 24 came from Manaus, seven from Rondônia and 105 from other municipalities.
“There is still a predominance of the Gamma variant, so we are on the alert, reinforcing the hegemonic surveillance so that we can observe any change in the predominance of the variants, if Delta will start to predominate as it did in other countries, or if we are going to continue with the variant Predominant range”, said the Superintendent of Health Surveillance of the Municipal Health Department, Márcio Garcia.
According to the 28th Epidemiological Bulletin, released today, since March 2020, the capital has 379,339 cases of covid-19, with 29,361 deaths. In 2021, there are 167,069 cases and 10,483 deaths. This year’s fatality rate is 6.3%, against 8.9% in 2020; and mortality at 157.4 per 100,000 inhabitants, against 283.4 per 100,000 last year. The incidence of the disease is 2,508 per 100,000 inhabitants, while in 2020 it was 3,186.6 per 100,000 inhabitants.
The city’s risk map for covid-19 indicates that among the 33 administrative regions, 11 present moderate risk, in the yellow classification, for transmission of the coronavirus. Which represents more than double compared to the previous week, when only five were in this category. It is the third consecutive week with progressive reduction in high-risk areas.
Administrative regions at moderate risk are Portuária, Lagoa, Vila Isabel, Penha, Bangu, Santa Cruz, Ilha do Governador, Santa Teresa, Barra da Tijuca, Rocinha and Vigário Geral. The others are classified as orange, that is, at high risk, including Centro, Rio Comprido, Pavuna, Botafogo, Jacarezinho, Maré and Cidade de Deus.
The analysis of the city’s risk map considers indicators such as hospitalizations and deaths registered weekly. According to the secretariat, the moving averages of these two data, in addition to confirmed cases and calls from the urgency and emergency network, have shown a sustained downward trend for a few weeks in the capital.
For Secretary Daniel Soranz, the numbers are very important because they show that vaccines, in fact, have an effect, save lives and protect people. He pointed out that the result was not expected for a winter month, in which there is usually an increase in flu cases.
“We were expecting in the city of Rio de Janeiro a threefold increase in hospitalization cases than what happened this month of July. So that’s great news. We still have people seriously hospitalized for covid. This is not the time to relax, but this is great news and shows that the vaccine works and contradicted our predictions”, said Soranz.
The life protection measures established in the decree published on May 27, 2021 continue to be extended until July 26, maintaining the alert level for each region. The inspection of compliance with the measures is carried out by the Municipal Secretariat of Public Order (Seop), the Municipal Guard of Rio de Janeiro and the Municipal Institute of Sanitary Surveillance, Zoonoses Surveillance and Agricultural Inspection (Ivisa-Rio) of the Municipal Secretariat of Health (SMS).
