About 7,000 people admitted to these centers will be able to protect themselves from both diseases. As of October 6, the campaign is extended to all those over 60 years of age
Rosario Díaz, 73, inaugurated this Monday, at the Virgen del Valle de El Palmar residence for the elderly, the simultaneous vaccination campaign against the flu and Covid in the Region of Murcia. “I have had all the vaccines and it has gone very well. I caught the Covid a long time ago but I had mild symptoms », she explained minutes after receiving both punctures, one in each arm. Nearly 7,000 users of 71 residences for the elderly and disabled will receive the fourth dose of the coronavirus vaccine, adapted to the Omicron variant, in the coming days. Simultaneously, they will also be given the flu vaccine. The staff of these centers (another 7,000 people, according to data provided by Social Policy) will also be protected against both diseases.
As of October 6, the simultaneous vaccination campaign against Covid and flu will be extended to the entire population over 60 years of age in health centers, as well as health personnel and people with risk factors. Those over 60 years of age may request an appointment for vaccination through the web, by phone or in person. In total, some 400,000 people will be able to protect themselves from Covid and the flu in the Region.
Many communities have opted for a simultaneous protection campaign against Covid and the flu, as this allows coverage to be increased and facilitates planning. In addition to the Region of Murcia, Asturias, Aragón and Extremadura also start flu and Covid vaccinations in nursing homes this Monday.
Children up to 5 years old
As of November 2, Health will vaccinate against the flu, for the first time, children between six months and 5 years old (in this case, it is only protected from the flu, not from Covid). The vaccination schedule includes another important novelty: 11-year-old boys will be vaccinated from this year against the human papillomavirus, as is already the case with girls. There is no specific date yet, but Health’s commitment is that those born in 2011 be protected before the end of this year.
The Minister of Health, Juan José Pedreño, was in favor last week of waiting for the report of the Vaccine Report, which brings together experts from all communities and the Ministry, to make a “common agreement” throughout Spain. The matter has not yet reached the Interterritorial Council, but the experts’ report is already available, Pedreño explained on Monday. Being favorable, the Ministry has decided not to wait for the meeting of the Interterritorial Council.
Finally, the regional calendar incorporates vaccination against herpes zoster in people born in 1958, at 65 years of age.
Covid rebound in Spain
Regarding the evolution of the pandemic, the Minister of Health pointed out that the situation is “stable” in the Region of Murcia, but warned that at the national level a rebound in the accumulated incidence during the last seven days is detected. This forces one to be “expectant,” he noted. The updated data on the epidemiological situation in the Region of Murcia will be published this Tuesday.
