His partner was with him and she couldn’t help him. When the rescuers arrived on the beach, they could only confirm his death.
He was called Alfredo Baccarini the 66 year old manoriginally from Lanuvio, who lost his life at sea in Anzio, on the afternoon of Sunday 16 June 2024. He was on the southern coast of the city in the province of Rome together with his wife.
The couple, like many other beachgoers, were enjoying a quiet Sunday at the seaside when tragedy suddenly struck. He was in the water when together with his partner he was swept away by the very strong current at that time.
According to what has been reconstructed, also thanks to the story of the witnesses present, the man and his wife, around 4pm, had decided to have a swimming in the sea. They were swimming to find some relief from Sunday’s hot temperatures.
Suddenly, perhaps because of the strong current, the man was swept away and had difficulty returning to shore. Some swimmers noticed the couple in difficulty and dived into the sea to retrieve him and bring him back to shore.

When the man reached the shoreline, helped by the other swimmers, he lost consciousness. He never woke up again. Also resuscitation attemptscarried out also by the 118 health workers who immediately rushed to the scene, were unable to do anything for him.
Perhaps the man was struck by a sudden illness, but only an autopsy will be able to establish the exact causes of his death. After the appropriate checks, also carried out by the Port Authority and the Carabinieri, the 66-year-old’s body was transported to the morgue, where it was available to the Judicial Authority.
