This is the story of the friendship between Carlos Fresco and his ten-year-old dog named Monty. For the past 18 months, the four-legged dog has been battling a bad leukemia, and its owner has always remained close to it. «I knew that Monty was dying because his tumor had returned – says Carlos Fresco -. He was diagnosed 18 months ago and initially responded well to chemotherapy, but unfortunately eight weeks ago the disease returned and his condition suddenly worsened. ‘
His owner knew he didn’t have much time left to share his beloved dog, and so he decided that the best way to say goodbye would be to take a last trip with him. He then took Monty to the top of Pen Y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales, located in the Brecon Beacons National Park.
“My dog loved walking in the hills even though he was very weak for them at the time. That’s why I decided to transport it on a wheelbarrow », he says. So they went on this last journey, and on their journey they unexpectedly met other people who joined them. «They were all very kind and compassionate – continues the man -. Some offered to help me push him on his last walk, and some of them were even moved. ”
The hill the owner chose is 880 meters high, “and I chose it because they often went there on vacation,” he says. This time Carlos took the dog there for a week and together they walked around the area, still on all fours on the wheelbarrow.
His story touched the hearts of many people, but sadly the dog’s health deteriorated within a few days and he died on June 21st. «He died right at the foot of my bed – said Carlos – and I want to thank with all my heart all the people who were with us in the last moving and exciting journey of Monty».
