Here is a little curiosity
In the days of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, at Westminster Abbey, at the end of the funeral which millions of people around the world witnessed live, the English national anthem resounded in the church. God save the King, returned to the ancient title after it had been changed in homage to the queen, by changing the King to Queen. You know there is alone a person in the world who cannot sing the hymn?
Looking at the pictures of the funeral, while everyone sang Gode save the King, God save the King, we noticed that everyone was singing that hymn. A patriotic and popular piece of music, which since 1825 is the de facto national and royal anthem of Britain (as well as of all the British overseas territories and the Commonwealth realms).
Since Elizabeth II took the English throne, the title and the words of the song have been changed, in order to pay homage to the queen and not the king, since the Kingdom had a sovereign. Arranged by Thomas Arne and re-arranged in 1962 by Benjamin Britten, today the anthem has returned to being God save the King, after Charles III’s coronation as King.
As we said, everyone at the funeral sang the British anthem. All but one, of course. The pursed lips of Charles III, also tightened in an attempt not to reveal the emotion for the disappearance of his mother (the English Royal they cannot cry in public), raised the question.
Why can’t the King sing Gode save the King? So how can’t the Queen sing Gode save the Queen? The answer is simple and intuitive: because she is the direct recipient of the song, as her mother was before him.
God save the King, the anthem for the King: today Charles III
When Elizabeth ascended the throne 70 years ago, the hymn was changed for her, to wish her long life by entrusting her work in the hands of God. will no longer be able to sing it. Because now he is the King and he cannot “self-sing” the words of the song.
If you are wondering what the hymn means, here is the translation.
“God save our gracious King,
long live our noble King,
God save the King!
Give him the victory,
happiness and glory,
may he reign over us for a long time;
God save the King!
O Lord, our God, arise,
disperse his enemies
and make them fall;
confuse their intrigues,
frustrates their dishonest maneuvers,
our hopes are placed on you,
oh, save us all!
The most precious gifts you keep,
be willing to pour it out on him;
may he reign for a long time;
can defend our laws
and always give us the opportunity
to sing with heart and voice,
God save the King! “
