A tourist in Tyrol felt the changeable weather in the mountains. He set out in summer clothes and then got stuck in the snow.
Mayrhofen – When hiking in the mountains, you should make sure you have the right equipment. The weather can change quickly at any time. This is often the downfall of tourists. Recently, for example, a barefoot hiker had to be rescued from a via ferrata due to the weather. The weather also proved fatal for a Chinese tourist who was cycling in the mountains.
Chinese tourist sets off on a mountain bike tour in summer clothes – in the middle of the night he calls the mountain rescue team
He had set out from Mayrhofen in the Zillertal on Friday morning, May 31, 2024, and wanted to follow a marked mountain bike route, such as South Tyrol News reported. He was wearing summer clothing, but his route quickly took him into areas where it was much colder and there was still snow.
However, the cyclist was clearly not deterred by this. Instead of realizing that he was not dressed appropriately for the weather conditions and turning back, he continued his tour. He continued to struggle through the increasing snow until late at night. At 2:30 a.m. he finally made an emergency call. He was exhausted and stuck in the snow.
Mountain rescue team has to respond to Chinese tourist – and issues urgent warning to hikers
The Sterzing mountain rescue team was then called out. At around 4:30 a.m., the rescuers reached the unfortunate cyclist. He had made it to a point 2,200 meters above sea level. The mountain rescue team warmed the man up and brought him back to the valley. Apart from the onset of hypothermia, the tourist survived his failed bike ride unscathed.
Unfortunately, it is not an isolated case that visitors go into the mountains unprepared and then have to be rescued. In a post on Facebook, the Sterzing mountain rescue service therefore once again urged caution: “In view of the heavy snowfall and the still unstable weather conditions, mountaineers are advised to go up the mountain appropriately equipped and to consult the weather report before any activity.”
The Garmisch-Partenkirchen mountain rescue service also had to rescue 29 hikers on the Zugspitzplatt on Saturday, June 1, 2024. The groups could no longer continue due to the weather. There was heavy snowfall on the Zugspitze. Sometimes, however, the rescuers are called out unnecessarily. As in the case of two German tourist groups who triggered a major search operation, although none of them were in distress. (sp)
