The young woman's family filed a complaint against the airport with the Balearic National Police. That coffee would have been expensive.
A young 21 year old woman risked her life after drinking a contaminated coffee by some insects, purchased at Palma de Mallorca airport. The incident occurred less than a week ago, when the girl, who works for an airline, was at the Son Sant Joan airport.
As reported by the local newspaper 'Ultima Hora', the girl had had coffee together with other colleagues from vending machine, but immediately noticed a strange taste. Looking more carefully into the cup, she discovered the presence of insects inside.
Immediately, his face began to swell and he had difficulty breathing – these were symptoms of one anaphylactic shock. Colleagues, alarmed by his sudden worsening, notified the airport medical services. The girl was urgently transported to hospital, where she was hospitalized for 36 hours in the intensive care unit. Fortunately, she was discharged in the last few hours.
The young woman's family presented a complaint against the airport to the Balearic National Police, which has launched an investigation. The presence of insects in the cup of coffee constitutes a possible crime against public health and could also fall under the crime of malicious injury. According to the complaint, the vending machine, located in an area of the airport reserved for employees and which was taken out of use, was “clearly poorly managed by airport staff”.
Palma airport management also announced the opening of an investigation about what happened. Furthermore, it announced that it will require the company that owns the vending machine to carry out a complete check on all machines to prevent such an event from happening again.
The “lethal coffee” incident could raise concerns about food safety inside airports and the maintenance of vending machines. We're all a little more unsure now about what we get to drink at the vending machines. But precisely in these situations, to guarantee the health of passengers and employees, healthiness and integrity should be the priority for airport authorities.
