The patient hit the doctor in the chest and tried to suffocate the health worker, both from the San Andrés health center
A doctor and an emergency technician from the Primary Care Emergency Service, SUAP, from the San Andrés health center in Murcia, were attacked on June 15 by a patient they treated at home. Health personnel went to a house to respond to a call for urgent assistance to a man with a drug addiction. Assistance was proceeding normally until the patient, who was not taking the medication prescribed by his psychiatrist, adopted an aggressive attitude and threw his fist at the doctor, who was hit in the chest and fell to the ground.
The technician, who came to his aid, struggled with the aggressor to try to reduce him and both fell to the ground, where the aggressor tried to suffocate the technician. Finally, and after moments of great tension, the doctor and the technician managed to get away and control the situation until the National Police arrived, according to the Medical Association, which has condemned the attack.
As a result of this attack, the technician suffered a myocardial contusion and various bruises and the doctor a contusion from the blow received, in addition to suffering episodes of insomnia and stress after suffering this situation. The victims report that, later, they learned that It was about a patient with a history of violence towards health workers and that this information was not provided in the notice, when preventive measures could have been taken.
Likewise, the health workers reported that assaults in the day-to-day of their work activity are becoming more frequent and that they are still awaiting a speedy trial. The College of Physicians expressed their full support for the health workers and all those who have suffered episodes of violence during the performance of their work, “given that this aggression is not the only one that we have been aware of in recent weeks,” they say in a statement.
Similarly, the collegiate body requires the Administration to take responsibility for these problems and implement effective measures to ensure the safety of its workers. «All health centers must be equipped with a security guard, cameras, consultations with double doors and all those measures that are effective to prevent episodes of this type, not only in health centers, but also for the protection of teams in warnings homes and public roads. The College also calls for the involvement and collaboration of the whole of society “to put an end, together and once and for all, to this serious problem posed by aggressions in the health field,” he concludes.
