It was the “far away” 2012 when 6 superheroes, not all so well known to the general public, appeared on the big screen directed by Joss Whedon and fought the threat of Loki and the Chitauri: thus the Avengers. Almost 10 years later, we have seen both cooked and raw, on TV and in the cinema, about this “herd” of heroes of all types, ready to fight the new enemy of the moment. If we think about it, perhaps the Hulk was undoubtedly one of the best known (especially given the peculiarity of coming out when Bruce Banner gets angry), but for the others only the work of the Marvel Studios has managed to make them so iconic that they are now unforgettable. The original group nearly 10 years ago could count Captain America, equipped with the serum of the super soldier, Thor, Asgardian God, Hulk, gamma-ray monster, Iron Man, in his armor equipped with dozens of weapons, and the Russian spy Natasha. Romanov, the Black Widow. Then there was also Hawkeye, which remained in its English-speaking name Hawkeye, a character who, in addition to being able to make use only of his training (like Black Widow), did not even use firearms but a bow and arrows. Now, after a long wait, the TV series dedicated to this character has finally arrived, ready to color our Christmas days. We previewed the first two episodes of Hawkeye, here is our review.
A quiet Christmas week
Inspired in terms of narration, plot and style by the work of Aja and Fraction, which you can find collected inside the Omnibus Normal life, Clint Barton is tired of the superhero life: without powers and therefore without abilities that make him immune to the damage suffered over time, his family week designed to celebrate Christmas will not go as he thought due to the arrival of Kate Bishop , a girl prodigy of martial arts and archery, who for a series of events will have to contend with the Mafia in Tracksuit Mafia and a series of very special characters.
The series, which will arrive tomorrow on Disney + with the first two episodes and then releasing the remaining 4 weekly, sees the return of Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton / Hawkeye e Hailee Steinfeld like Kate Bishop. Among the other accredited actors, the one already seen appears Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova of Black Widow), Vera Farmiga (Eleanor Bishop), Alaqua Cox (Maya Lopez, aka Echo) e Tony Dalton (Jack Duquesne, aka Lo Swordsman). For Marvel fans, these last two names may already be known, but we obviously leave all the amazement to the surprise that the next episodes will be able to offer us. In terms of scrolling, the series does not give too much weight to itself, almost as if we were in front of a Christmas-Series where instead of gifts and marzipan we have rigged arrows and hand-to-hand combat.
The first two episodes lay the foundations for the next four in a complete way, practically acting as an intro for what will then come, and which will probably be compressed into the remaining four episodes: it is interesting to see the evolution Clint had after the events of Endgame, just as it is fantastic to see – again – a young superheroine arrive on the stage at Marvel Studios. In fact, if you haven’t noticed it yet, the idea of the Young Avengers is increasingly concrete, considering the children of Wanda Maximoff and a possible Miles Morales that could arrive soon (Spider-Man: No Way Home?), Not to mention the eligible candidates Iron Heart, Miss Marvel And Patriot.
A very human superhero
Aja and Fraction’s run on Hawkeye was peculiar in that it showed a superhero with zero powers (but an incredible skill with weapons and bow) grappling with everyday life, made of patches, painkillers and many punches taken, blows that a God of Thunder could cash easily but that a human undergoes in a profound way. The series abandons the dynamism and the discontinuous narrative of the comic to propose a series of constructions more suitable for the media, and the transposition works in an excellent way.
With his hearing terribly damaged and with the desire not to get involved in too big problems, the civic sense of the superhero will prevail over Clint who, reluctantly, will have to return to the field against this bizarre Mafia who always dresses in overalls, a series of suspicious characters and a young girl who is as good as she is not very conscientious (and also a bit clumsy). Perhaps this, at least in the first two episodes, works in a sublime way: the idea of not being in a world created by the mind of a witch, a geopolitical battle between guys with superserves or journeys between the various multiverses. We have before us a hero who, despite being made of flesh and bones (human), is one of those who fought Thanos, among those who saved New York and who, as you will see, impacted more lives than you might think.
Hawkeye is a series that – for now, speaking of the review of the first two episodes – runs fast, an interesting eye on what a superhero does when not wearing purple, red or black suits. It’s the way to show how you don’t need to summon lightning or know how to jump a building in order to do the right thing, even if it means learning how to put band-aids on your face between cuts, bruises and damaged organs.
