Google has developed a tool that allows Chrome browser users to verify that online credentials are compromised.
The tool, called Password Checkup, is free for Chrome and was released in 2019 in an attempt to increase users’ online security. The software checks databases of usernames and passwords that have been stolen from websites by hackers and made available online.
Google password verification helps the user to change usernames and passwords if leaked by hackers.

“Since our launch, more than 650,000 people have participated in our experiment,” Jennifer Pullman, a Google engineer, told The Sun newspaper.
“In the first month alone, we verified 21 million usernames and passwords and flagged over 316,000 as insecure – 1.5% of logins verified by the extension.”
How to verify the password
Password Checkup software can be loaded into Google Chrome and lets the user know if their account data has been compromised in a cyber attack or data breach.
Once installed, the Chrome extension runs in the background of the browser and checks all login data used.
If the password or username matches a Google database with more than 4 billion compromised credentials, the software will flag them.
An alert that appears on the screen reads: “Password Checkup has detected that your password is no longer secure due to a data breach. You should change your password now.”
If a new data breach occurs, the tool will let you know if any of your passwords have been compromised the next time you log into Chrome, according to The Sun.
The software shows exposed accounts in a list that you can click to change passwords.
All information is encrypted and Google informs you that it cannot see personal data.
“We created Password Checkup so that no one, including Google, can know your account details,” says Google.
“Password Check-up was created with complete privacy. He never reports any identifying information about his accounts, passwords or device,” warns the company
