HBO has started the casting to find the actors to play the characters in the new Harry Potter TV serieswith research that seems to aim for inclusion and diversity, as also specified in the announcement from the manufacturer.
We are therefore looking for new faces destined to interpret Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger within the TV series that represents the new adaptation of JK Rowling’s work in television version, with a casting that is open only to residents in UK and Ireland, aged 9-11.
The production of the new TV series is led by writer and executive producer Francesca Gardiner, who recently won two Emmys for the series Succession.
A very ambitious production
The new Harry Potter TV series is reportedly aiming to be a “faithful adaptation” of Rowling’s novels, with the author reportedly involved in the production as an executive producer. However, there may not be any changes in characterizations from what we’re used to in the film tradition.
In the announcement with which the casting is presented it is in fact stated: “We are committed to guaranteeing a inclusive and diverse casting“, furthermore “For each role, please propose qualified interpreters, without regard to ethnicity, gender, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity or other”.
Candidates must submit, by October 31, a presentation video of a maximum length of 30 seconds in which they present, in their own accent, a short story or poem not taken from the books in question, while in a second video of a maximum length of one minute they must tell a little about themselves and describe a family member, a friend or a pet to whom they are particularly attached.
The Harry Potter TV series doesn’t have an official title yet but there’s still time before we can see it: the Filming will start in 2025which places the release of the series no earlier than 2026. Warner Bros.’ plan for this production is decidedly ambitious, given that there is talk of at least seven seasons, one for each original book.
