Hangar 13the studio behind Mafia III, is tackling another series of layoffs. However, the team continues to work on a Mafia prequel and another untitled project.
According to Kotaku, developers from all three of the studio’s worldwide offices were fired today. The layoffs have particularly affected the Novato headquartersCalifornia: Nearly 50 developers lost their jobs here alone, drastically reducing staff size, which previously had just 87 employees.
“I know it sucks,” Nick Baynes, head of the Brighton, UK office, told Novato employees today, Kotaku reported. “I’m sorry I’m not there to deliver this message. I’ll be coming soon. I know you need guidance and a local facility and we’re working on it.”
It is not the first time that Hangar 13 fires a large number of employees: The studio fired a significant number of employees in both 2017 and 2018. The studio was also drastically affected by the cancellation of the Take-Two project titled Volt, which was abandoned despite an investment of 53 million dollars. At the time, around 200 developers were left without a project to work on.
According to Kotaku, Baynes said the plan calls for developers remaining in Hangar 13 to focus on Mafia prequel and on Project Hammer, another project currently in the works.
The founder and head of the studio, Haden Blackman, he resigned earlier this month. The event coincided with a series of other voluntary departures along with layoffs.
2K released the following to Kotaku declaration: “2K is fully committed to the future of Hangar 13, as the studio is going through a challenging but ultimately promising transition period. As part of our ongoing assessments to ensure that our resources are aligned with our goals, we have made some changes that have resulted in reduced positions and separation from some colleagues. These decisions are always difficult. We are doing everything possible to work with affected employees to find them new roles in other 2K projects and teams, and are providing full support to those who cannot be relocated, putting them in contact with networks and resources in the sector to find new opportunities outside of 2K “.
