As often happened in the history of the Canadian Grand Prix, the 2022 edition – held last Sunday – also reserved interesting data for statistical purposes for various drivers: from the front row conquered by Fernando Alonso after ten years to the 26th victory of Max Verstappen, for example, but also to the period of distance from the top step of the podium for Lewis Hamilton. The Englishman of Mercedes, at the wheel of a W13, seemed in better shape than in the last races – a fact that has generated strong controversy from the top teams due to the technical directives of the FIA, which would have benefited the performance of the German company after the porpoising problems accused at the beginning of the season – has in fact equaled one of its biggest negative records.
With a 3rd place finish in Montreal, the seven-time world champion has reached his maximum number of consecutive races without success: 10. A fact that, in the course of his career, had only occurred twice. In the first case, after winning the first of its 7 world titles in 2008, McLaren del 2009 he had difficulty in adapting to the regulatory revolution of the world championship of that year, curiously in circumstances similar to the current ones, to the point of keeping the reigning champion away from victory. The abstinence from success in F1 was however interrupted on the occasion of the GP of Hungaryprecisely after 10 winless GPs.
The second episode, however, dates back to the season 2013, the first lived at the wheel of Mercedes after his experience in McLaren. Before the transfer Hamilton had to retire on the occasion of his last GP with the team of Woking, Brazil, to then continue in a period of ‘abstinence from success’ in the first part of 2013. Here too, among other things, it was again the Hungarian GP to break the spell, once again after ten races. To ensure that Hamilton does not worsen his record, the number 44 is called to affirmation in the next race on the calendar, moreover in his England.
In addition to the ‘zeros’ in the first nine GPs of 2022, to these is added the bitter disappointment experienced in Abu Dhabi last year, when, in addition to finishing behind Verstappen, he also lost the world title in the last laps of an excited GP. If he were to win at Silverstone on the first weekend of July, the British merits would merge with the inevitable controversies coming from the top teams linked to the technical directives of the FIA anti-porpoising.
