Over the past few years, despite the pandemic, Formula 1 has continued to expand towards new shores, never explored in the past. The 2020 season, whose calendar has been upset to be able to respond to the challenges imposed by Covid, has allowed the Circus to re-embrace historical tracks of ‘old Europe’ such as Imola, Istanbul, Nurburgring or to know new ones for this category, such as Portimao and Mugello. Some of these tracks have remained on the program this year as well and will remain so in the next ones. The plan of the F1 led by Liberty Media, however, is that of conquer new lands.
This explains the entries, between this season and the next, of locations such as Miami, Losail and Saudi Arabia, with Jeddah first and – according to plans – Qiddiya from 2023. Excluding Antarctica, the only continent currently without a Formula 1 GP is Africa. The last Grand Prix raced in the Black Continent dates back to 1993 and was held in Kyalami, South Africa. The same track, now modernized, is a candidate for what would be a highly anticipated return on the calendar. Many pilots in favor of this idea, also supported by the top of the sport, in the figure of Stefano Domenicali. One of the most important ‘sponsors’ for the reintegration of the African track in the World Championship is undoubtedly Lewis Hamilton.
The seven-time world champion is a reference figure across the continent and, interviewed by various media including the site RacingNews365.com, reiterated his willingness to compete in South Africa. “The place that I really feel dear to my heart and the one where it would be most important for me to have a Formula 1 race again is the South Africa – said the Mercedes star – I think there is a big following there and I think it would be nice to be able to show how beautiful that land is“, He concluded.
