Qualification as protagonist in his Silverstone for Lewis Hamilton, which inflamed his audience with great laps throughout the session under an intermittent rain that made it really difficult for everyone. The seven-time world champion of the Mercedes until the end he was fighting for a placement at least in the first two rows, but in the end he had to settle for fifth position behind Ferrari and Red Bull.
The wet asphalt certainly played an advantage in favor of the Silver Arrows just in the weekend in which the Brackley team introduced a substantial step of updates on the W13. The package, however, was not judged so impactful by Lewis, especially in the dry conditions tested in the second and third free practice sessions on Friday and Saturday: it will take a lot of work to fill the gap from the first two forces on the grid.
“I don’t know if I expected more from the updates. It wasn’t a huge step forward, we just improved the car a bit. I wouldn’t necessarily say the car is better this weekend – Hamilton commented – We continue to have the problems we have had for some time. The track is a bit smoother and of course with a smooth track it is better for us, but we still have problems at high speed. There are still many improvements to be made ”.
The final result of qualifying did not particularly impress the ‘king’ of Silverstone: “I don’t want to be negative, but I’m not particularly happy. In the dry this could probably be the best possible result, but with the rain we were fighting for the top three places. We got the strategy wrong in the last two laps and it’s a big shame. But now we try to get a better result in the race. It will be hard to think about the podium: we have Ferrari and Red Bull ahead of us, who are faster than us. If I keep up with them, however, we could do something at the strategy level. Maybe there will be a Safety Car and we can fight ”.
