Ben Sulayem on a freewheel
“We need to differentiate our sport from rap music. We are not rappers, and yet how many times a minute do pilots swear? We shouldn’t be like that, that’s something rappers do, not us…”: thus the president of the International Automobile Federation Mohammed Ben Sulayem he had expressed himself by commenting on the excessive swearing of the drivers during the team radio during the race weekends.
Certainly effective phrases, which go hand in hand with the recent regulatory change which has included in the bad conduct of pilots also the foul language.
Hamilton doesn’t like it
On Thursday in Singapore, Mercedes’ seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton explained that he did not appreciate the comparison made by Ben Sulayem: “I definitely think there is too much swearing, and that with sanctions, people will stop.
But I don’t like the way he phrased it. The comparison to rappers was very stereotypical, and when you consider that most rappers are black, it’s like saying, ‘We’re not like them.’ So I think the wording was wrong and there was a racial element to it. Although I agree with the concept of cleaning up the language a bit.”
