Since its debut season in Formula 1 Lewis Hamilton has always shown to have a special bond, almost sealed in fate, with the Brazil. On the Interlagos circuit he lost the chance to win the world title as a rookie in 2007, when his first world triumph seemed to be done. On the same track a year later he took the title in one of the most memorable finals in the history of the sport, overtaking Timo Glock’s Toyota to grab the last position to become champion. Also in the green-gold country he made one of his most beautiful feats in 2021, recovering from 20th to fifth in the Sprint Race and from tenth to first in the Sunday race.
Then, in the background, there is his spiritual link with the legend of Ayrton Senna. The constant reference of English to the exploits carried out by the idol when he was a child has inevitably marked a bridge between him and the Brazilian public, which in recent years has begun to encourage him as is usually done with a home favorite. In November, on the occasion of his latest success on the Paulista circuit, he had completed the lap of honor waving the Brazilian flag and taking it with him to the podium, unleashing the jubilation of the crowd. Now that banner could somehow become ‘his of him’ of him. A sort of second banner in his life, after the British Union Jack. Indeed, Sir Lewis Hamilton could soon become honorary citizen of Brazil.
AndrĂ© Figueiredo, 55-year-old federal deputy of Brazil, a militant in the ranks of the Democratic Labor Party, has in fact proposed the candidacy of the seven-time world champion. The process of the proposal is following all the traditional practice and is currently being examined by the appointed commission, which it arrived at on 8 February last. Digging into the process it is interesting to discover how it all started on November 15, 2021, or the day following that of his triumph on the track, crowned by the lap of honor with the green, yellow and blue flag. The reasons for Hamilton’s request for honorary citizenship are rooted in his infinite respect for the country and for Senna.
“At the end of the race, Hamilton once again paid homage to Senna by bringing the Brazilian flag with him in a lap of honor around the circuit – reads in an extract of the official document that shows the reasons for the citizenship application – and raised the national flag on the podium during the awards ceremony. This gesture of respect for the memory of the greatest Brazilian driver resonated in every one of our citizens“.
