The protagonists of the qualifying for the sprint qualification on Saturday speak. Lewis: “The audience gives me energy.” Verstappen: “We are close to Mercedes”. The Ferrari driver: “I like to arrive unprepared for the race”
This best time in Silverstone qualifying for Lewis Hamilton is a great little redemption. After the successes of Max Verstappen in the last few races, the Englishman wanted to give a wing stroke for Mercedes, stop the rival’s streak. Today’s is not yet a pole, however, due to the rules of this experimental format, the real pole will be assigned tomorrow in the 17-lap sprint qualifying that Hamilton will start in front of everyone. But the roar of the English public present today had nothing to envy to those of the prevailing days. Lewis and the Black Arrows know they have a good car and great support on Saturday and Sunday as well.
Hamilton confirmed it: “I missed all these people – he said – I am grateful to the public, the energy they transmit is incredible. I was hoping that the team and the fans would push me, it’s thanks to them. I did a job to improve the car even this morning in the simulator because I had the morning off, we left no stone unturned, why did I have to sit instead of trying to improve? When I crossed the finish line, my heart was in my mouth. Really without these people I would not have been able to make this time. Special this qualification, doing it at home is beautiful. We wait because Saturday and Sunday we have to go fast, I need the public. Teamwork makes dreams come true ”.
Max Verstappen has to settle for now, but he is in a position to scratch behind his English rival: “Disappointed? We have to look for ourselves – said the Dutchman from Red Bull – the car is very good but in the final I had understeer and I couldn’t attack the corners well. It’s not a question of set-up, I don’t know. But we are close to the Mercedes. The sprint race qualification? Bizarre sensation, you push in qualifying but it doesn’t mean anything for the real race, we’ll see, in the sprint race I can go fast ”.
Valtteri Bottas will start third in the sprint qualification: “Excellent result to improve the qualification as a team, now we will see the sprint qualification. I went out first and so I didn’t use the trails but that’s okay, we can fight in the qualifying race. Did I help Lewis? Yes, I played as a team and I think it’s normal ”.
The best of the Ferrari drivers was Charles Leclerc, fourth, who did not say he was sorry for this format for now: “I like having little preparation, less time to look at the data and having to be ready immediately. I enjoyed this new approach. Now eyes on the race and we hope to do well ”.
Carlos Sainz will start ninth and was hoping for something more: “In Q2 we were very fast, it seemed like he was going well. Then I don’t know why we were slower in Q3. The time in Q2 would have been enough to finish in the top 5 or 6. We have to analyze what happened there and then push for the sprint qualification ”.
