His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, representative of the ruler in the Al Dhafra region and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, affirmed the authority’s commitment to continue its efforts to preserve the environment, marine biodiversity and natural resources of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and the broader marine ecosystem of the United Arab Emirates, announcing His Highness the start of the authority to build and develop A research vessel that is considered the most advanced and developed in the Middle East, and the latest in the region, and is distinguished by its use of technologies that preserve the sustainability of the environment.
His Highness said: After the resounding success that we achieved with the improvement of the fish stocks of some of the main commercial fish species in the waters of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, as a result of the policies, procedures and administrative measures taken by the authority, we are proud to continue our efforts to study fisheries and marine biodiversity and preserve the important achievements made so far. The addition of a new advanced scientific research vessel to lead our marine research is a critical achievement that will enable us to monitor and conserve our fish stocks and marine biodiversity, as well as enhance the passion of young Emirati researchers to study fisheries for years to come.
His Highness expressed his enthusiasm for adding a new multi-purpose research vessel to pioneer the research carried out by the authority in ocean sciences and deep-water fisheries.
The ship, estimated to be 50 meters long, will operate in the territorial waters of the United Arab Emirates in the Arabian Gulf, through which the authority will be able to complete its studies of the marine environment and fish wealth in the previously studied waters, which are 10 meters deep and deeper.
It will be designed and built to suit the conditions of the region, as the waters of the Gulf are characterized by their shallowness and high salinity.
The ship, which will carry approximately 30 people, will include the latest research equipment, as it includes 5 laboratories to study samples on the ship, and a remotely operated vehicle that has the ability to dive under water.
The ship has the ability to conduct comprehensive marine and fishery surveys, including basic marine environmental surveys in deep waters; fisheries resource assessment surveys; surveying coral reef and seagrass habitats; studying the quality of marine waters and sediments; And surveys of marine life in deep waters such as dolphins, dugongs and turtles.
The ship will contribute to supporting the authority’s efforts to respond to threats facing the marine environment, including marine pollution; The ship will also be able to assess marine sites and habitats and environmental rehabilitation in addition to other marine studies.
His Excellency Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Bawardi, Minister of State for Defense Affairs and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, said: We at the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi always strive to be a step forward, and to be among the pioneers in the field of advanced scientific research studies, using the most innovative tools and equipment. The development of this new and innovative research vessel will contribute to maintaining our leadership in marine scientific research and in sustainable fisheries management – which is one of our key strategic priorities and one of our important success stories.
Her Excellency Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, said: “By using the latest technology and by making sure that all equipment and protocols on the ship are environmentally friendly, we will continue to put Abu Dhabi on the scientific map as a leader in environmental and sustainability affairs. It can serve as a benchmark for fisheries studies in the international community, emphasizing that the future vision of the Authority to conserve fisheries and ensure their recovery through this research vessel is an example of its commitment to the sustainability of the marine environment.
Her Excellency Dr. Sheikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, said: We at the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi are keen that all our policies and strategies are supported by science and based on knowledge and collecting scientific data and information. Innovative technologies, this new research vessel will be one of our pioneering initiatives in the field of fisheries studies and of fundamental importance to our research department – especially our fisheries, which we always strive to enhance their stability and protection. Research and studies carried out by universities and research centers in the country.
She added, “Despite the progress we’ve made and after we’ve announced over the past two years a clear improvement in our fish stocks, we won’t stop there. We know we can always do better, and that’s why we’re working on the design and construction of this state-of-the-art vessel.” which will play an important role in helping us develop strategies and management plans to facilitate the maintenance of positive proportions and rates of our fish stocks.. The ship will also complete comprehensive seasonal marine environmental baseline surveys in deep waters to enhance our understanding of our critical habitats – corals, seagrass and key indicator species – and sea turtles and dugongs. dolphins and others.
The ship will be built by Freire Shipbuilding in Vigo, Spain under the supervision of Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding Company and with the support of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi team .. The design of the ship began in January 2021, and it is scheduled to arrive in Abu Dhabi in December 2022 .. And in its capacity as the representative of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi – Abu Dhabi for the project, ADSB will be responsible for managing the design and supervising the construction of the ship in Vigo, Spain.. The first piece of steel will be installed on the ship in June 2021, and the initial sea trial will take place in Vigo in late 2022 with trials in The Gulf during the ship’s voyage to Abu Dhabi.
