This year we will all be able to play with the famous Halo 2 demo from E3 2003, “Earth City”. More precisely we should call it “infamous”, given the history that concerns it. No, the problem was not qualitative, at least not explicitly.
A year before Halo 2 hit Microsoft stores brought a demo of the game to the Los Angeles trade showstill the most important event in the gaming industry at the time. The quality was really high, so much so that the reports made the anticipation for the game grow even more.
A surprise launch
Unfortunately, it contained ideas that were discarded by Bungie for the final game, such as urban highways, so much so the entire mission was canceled and did not make it into the gameto the disgrace of fans.
Who would have thought that one day it would be playable by the general public? The return was announced by 343 Industries itself, now Halo Studios, which collaborated with Digsite, a team specialized in restoring content from the series. We will be able to download it from the Steam Workshop as a mod/add-on content for Halo: The Master Chief Collection (so it will be PC only). It will be completely freenaturally.
The development studio announced during the 2024 Halo World Championship Series, which took place over the weekend, that the demo will be revived for the 20th anniversary of Halo 2which drops on November 9, 2024. The demo will have updated content, will also include new lip sync for deleted scenes, and will take advantage of assets from the latest build of Halo 2.
