Haiti’s Presidential Transition Council named this Tuesday (28) Garry Conille as the Caribbean country’s new prime minister, the third name nominated for the position by the collegiate in just over a month.
Conille, who had already been Prime Minister of Haiti between October 2011 and May 2012, was chosen in a process with several names, after four of the nine members of the transition council selected Fritz Bélizaire, who was Minister of Sports between 2006 and 2011 , as prime minister at the end of April.
The process was redone because critics pointed out that Bélizaire’s choice did not follow the procedures established for the creation of the transition council.
Bélizaire had replaced Michel Patrick Boisvert, who had been appointed interim prime minister by the transitional collegium after its members were sworn in on April 25.
The council is tasked with organizing the holding of elections and the formation of a new government by February 2026, amid a crisis of widespread violence that worsened from February onwards, with then-Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s refusal to leave office.
Ultimately, there was an agreement and he resigned just hours before the Presidential Transition Council took office.
