Haiti’s top prosecutor wants Prime Minister Ariel Henry to be questioned about his alleged role in the assassination of President Moise. This is reported by international media. The prime minister is said to have made phone calls with a prime suspect in the hours after Moïse’s murder. Henry denies all charges and has fired the prosecution.
In his letter to the judge, prosecutor Bed-Ford Claude writes that “there are enough compromising elements to prosecute Henry and indict him.” As part of the investigation, Henry is not allowed to leave the island for the time being. There is, however, an obstacle: according to AFP news agency In Haiti, a prime minister may only be questioned if the president gives his consent. Haiti is without a president after the assassination of Moïse.
Under pressure at home, President Moise was shot dead in early July when a group of gunmen broke into his home. 44 people have been arrested so far for Moïse’s murder, including at least 18 Colombian mercenaries. In the investigation into the murder, the name of a former civil servant, Joseph Felix Badio, has surfaced. He would be jointly responsible for the planning and execution of the murder.

Henry called suspect shortly after president’s assassination
Phone taps show that Badio was near Moise’s house the night of the assassination and that current Prime Minister Henry called him twice in the hours after the president was killed. Badio himself has been untraceable since the attack. Henry, who had been appointed prime minister just two days before the assassination of President Moïse, previously said he knew Badio.
Ariel Henry has called the requests to give statements “diversions,” “designed to create confusion and prevent justice from running its course.” He fired Chief Prosecutor Claude for “a serious administrative offense” and appointed a replacement. The BBC writes however, that a prime minister in Haiti does not have the power to fire a prosecutor. Claude, who learned of his resignation on Monday, appeared at work on Tuesday, according to the news channel.
