The United Nations World Food Program declared a humanitarian crisis in Haiti. The country is grappling with a cholera outbreak amidst malnutrition, gang violence and inflation. Some 4.7 million people, almost half the population, face hunger and more than 100,000 children in Haiti under the age of five suffer from severe malnutrition, making them especially vulnerable to the cholera outbreak.
Thousands of Haitians took to the streets of Port-au-Prince on October 17 to protest against the shipment of tactical vehicles and military planes that the US and Canada delivered to combat gangs in the Caribbean country. The criminal gangs in the country have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Haiti. Blockades of a major fuel terminal have caused most transportation to be halted, and looting and gang shootings are becoming more common.
