The water system in Ellswort County, Texas, was the target of an invasion in March 2019. The culprit, Whyatt Travnichek, claimed responsibility for the crime now, more than two years later.
He was an employee of the municipal water company until January of the same year, when he resigned. Two months later he put his plan into action: he hacked into the treatment system and turned off filtration and disinfection. He used a cell phone to commit the crime.

The US Environmental Protection Agency, the EPA, and the FBI have recommended 12 months and a day in prison for Travnichek to the judiciary.
Despite not having had victims, the case raised an alert for the authorities to the practice of the so-called Killware, a hacker invasion that puts people’s lives at risk.
