Car summit with Robert Habeck – will the end result be bonuses for “whatever”? CSU politician Ulrich Lange believes the Green minister is on the wrong track.
VW staggers, the German car industry worried – with a virtual “car summit” Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) wants to take countermeasures. Car manufacturers, suppliers and the IG Metall union are involved. Their homework beforehand: to name obstacles to the success of electric cars, for example, and to outline their ideas for fair competition. Above all, however, there were political calls for new bonuses. For example, for a comeback of the “scrappage bonus”.
The CSU transport politician Ulrich Lange views the appointment with great scepticism, to put it mildly. He doubts that Habeck – the “worst economics minister of all time”, as the Bavarian Swabian IPPEN.MEDIA says.
Habeck receives CSU criticism for car summit: “Whatever bonuses”
“Habeck’s meeting with the automotive industry is not a summit, but a one-man show for self-congratulation. He is not interested in an honest exchange, but only in himself,” judged Lange. “We need quick, effective measures now,” he explained. But this explicitly does not mean “new scrapping, environmental, or whatever bonuses.”
The consequences of this are known from the past: “First a fire in demand, then just scorched earth.” In addition, the traffic light coalition – in the budget dispute that has been simmering for months – has “no money at all” for this. BMW also warned on Monday against “short-term, market-distorting flash in the pan.”
CSU wants relief for VW, BMW and Co. – “philosophical word salad will not lead us out of the crisis”
When asked, Lange instead spoke in favor of eliminating regulations. One helpful option would be to ease the “fleet limits”; VW had already made this request. The traffic light coalition must also commit to “openness to technology,” explained Lange.
The so-called fleet limit refers to an average maximum value for the CO₂ emissions of all newly registered cars. The value is set by the EU. In the dispute over “technology openness”, the conservatives are concerned about not setting electric mobility as the sole future standard from a political perspective. One inflammatory term in this context is “e-fuels”. The FDP is also fighting hard for this option – and is earning anger from both the coalition partners and the opposition.
Lange also believes that tax relief for the automotive industry would be helpful. However, this would also affect the budget. The CSU politician believes that Habeck is on the wrong track: “Our automotive industry will not emerge from the crisis with flowery imagery and philosophical word salad.” At the weekend, Lange had written a guest article for Merkur.de warned of an “automobile collapse” in Germany.
