United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has said that a world without extreme poverty or hunger is within reach.
Guterres added in a tweet via his Twitter account: “But because of our decisions, it is not the world we chose. At the United Nations General Assembly, I am calling for the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals Catalyst, led by the Group of Twenty, to promote
sustainable development in developing countries.
Guterres had warned at the opening of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly that humanity is threatened by a variety of dangers, noting that global powers appear “unwilling or unable” to confront them.
He warned that “these crises threaten the very essence of humanity’s future and the fate of our planet,” adding that “progress on all these and other issues is hostage to geopolitical tensions.”
He said problems, ranging from the war in Ukraine to food shortages to a sharp increase in the cost of living to serious environmental threats, threaten to derail the world, putting it in a “grave global dysfunction”.
He added that “no major global challenge can be solved by a coalition of the willing. We need the world’s coalition.”
