The elected president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, is already beginning to put together his cabinet of ministers to begin exercising as of August 7, while it begins to make the connection with the current Government.
One of the portfolios with the most expectations is that of Sports, a position currently held by Guillermo Herrera. Now the first candidates for the position begin to sound.
Carlos González Puche: a controversial name
According to sources close to Petro, the elected president initially has three names on his mind. One of them could become controversial. Is about Carlos González Puche, executive director of the Colombian Association of Professional Soccer Players (Acolfutpro).
González Puche was a professional soccer player: he acted in Millonarios, América and Cúcuta Deportivo. He is a lawyer from the Universidad Externado de Colombia and has more than 25 years of experience in sports law. He is also part of the Fifpro Board of Directors and belongs to the FIFA Football Court as an arbitrator of the Dispute Resolution Chamber on behalf of the footballers.
From Acolfutpro, González Puche has been working for the rights of soccer players for several years, which has led him to have differences with the directors of the Colombian Soccer Federation and Dimayor, who even today have not recognized the right to collective bargaining.
María Isabel Urrutia: an athlete in the deck
A national sports star also appears in the deck: María Isabel Urrutia, the first Colombian athlete to win Olympic gold: she did it in Sydney 2000. She was also world weightlifting champion, a sport she came to after having started in athletics.
After her retirement as an active athlete, Urrutia was elected representative to the Chamber for the special circumscription of blacks. She also presented herself as a candidate for mayor of Cali. In recent times, María Isabel works as a trainer at Deporte Capital.
Javier Suárez, a trusted man of Petro
The third name is that of Javier Suárez Alonso, current deputy director of the District Sports Recreation Institute of Bogotá, who was also the head of this same entity at the time that Petro was mayor of Bogotá, between 2012 and 2015.
Suárez is an economist from the University of Cergy – Pontoise (France), with specializations in public policy and project management. He was also a high-performance athlete: he was a fencer.
