Thousands of people erupted in jubilation and took to the streets of the towns and cities of Colombia this Sunday to celebrate the election of Gustavo Petro as president of the country, the first leftist candidate to arrive at the Casa de Nariño, seat of the executive.
Caravans of cars and people raising Colombian flags were the common denominator of this celebration accompanied by rain and coldat least in Bogotá, where the festival of vehicles, enlivened by batucadas and fireworks, collapsed some avenues of the city.

Salute to the idol
To the cry of “Petro Presidente”, “yes it was possible, yes it was possible to beat the machines”, Thousands of people gathered in the central Plaza de Bolívar, the political and legislative heart of the country, to celebrate.
Petro is a declared fan of Independiente Santa Fe and although his proposals on sports policy in his government little touched them, it has been linked to football.
In August 2015, Diego Maradona visited Colombia and Petro invited him to play a party for peace.
The current president of Colombia was, on that occasion, mayor of Bogotá, while Maradona was received by former liberal senator Piedad Córdoba.
Today, the photo of Petro with Maradona is displayed on networks. That match was played at the Techo stadium and among other football figures were Freddy Rincón, Faustino Asprilla and Adolfo Valencia.
