A construction tycoon who was little known at the beginning of the year has moved into the second round of Colombia’s elections with a real chance of winning the presidency as voters rally against his left-wing rival.
Rodolfo Hernandez achieved 28 percent, compared to 40 percent for ex-guerrilla fighter and former Bogota mayor Gustavo Petro, electoral authorities said Sunday night.

Hernandez edged out Federico Gutierrez, the leading conservative candidate, who won 24 percent.
He and many of his key supporters already back Hernandez. The result paves the way for a June 19 contest between Hernandez, a populist whose policies are largely a blank slate, and the front-runner Petro, who would phase out the oil and coal industries, effectively destroying the economic model at a time when Colombia thrives on high energy prices.
And the sport?
The two candidates have spoken little about their proposals with the sport, but they have them. They have been skeptical on the subject, but they have shown their faces.
Hernández, for example, believes that working at the base for the future is key, that is why the seedbeds will be important.
Warns that coaches must be trained and that it is necessary to develop investment ideas in infrastructure with quality scenarios.
As for athletes, the candidate from Santander points out that the Olympic and world champions should retire with a good salary.
Petro, for his part, says that the basis of everything is Youth and that will point to a great support towards that good number of people.
For him, physical activity and recreation is key for youth to have a better future. The good use of free time is an ideal path.
The candidate points out that the promotion of the population will be a priority in his mandate to play sports and will do so with the support of colleges and universities.
The sports schools and the leagues will strengthen them in order. Similarly, it emphasizes support for people with disabilities.
