Armed men kidnapped at least 35 women who were returning from a wedding in Katsina state in northwestern Nigeria, security sources said Monday.
This operation is the largest mass kidnapping in a series of kidnappings that the country has witnessed in the recent period.
Abubakar Aliyu, a police spokesman, said, “People suspected of being armed bandits ambushed and kidnapped approximately 35 women” on their way back from a wedding in the Sabwa area on Thursday night.
Naseer Muaz, Commissioner of Internal Security in Katsina State, pointed out that the number of people who were kidnapped while accompanying the bride to her home may be higher.
“Officials went to the village and were told that 53 people had been kidnapped,” Moaz said.
He added, “It is very dangerous for a convoy carrying a bride to walk in the dark in an area exposed to the danger of bandits. The bandits seized this opportunity and kidnapped them.”
The police are conducting a search operation to find the kidnapped people, the security forces announced.
Gangs carry out kidnappings on highways, in homes, or even in schools.
These gangs are active from bases in the forests of the northwestern and central states of the country.
