Animation is an art form for all types of audiences. Although Disney and Pixar focus on children, something that has played a large role in general consumer perception, Guillermo del Toro has tried to break with this thinking, and Part of his passion for this form of art and entertainment is due to the work of Hayao Miyazakiof which the Mexican filmmaker has revealed his opinion.
In a recent interview as part of TIME magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people of 2024, del Toro spoke about the importance of the works created by Studio Ghibli, and specifically those that have been directed by Miyazaki. This is what he said about it:
“Miyazaki’s work provokes that rare emotion: the chill when recognizing a type of beauty that is impossible in the real world and that, therefore, only exists in his films. However, he is also a brutal realist about greed, war, and human anger. He knows that we shape and destroy the planet and that humans are the best and worst in our world.
He is completely genuine. A unique creator who fully exists in his art. One of my 10 favorite narrators in any audiovisual medium.”
In 2023, Pinocchiodirected by Guillermo del Toro, won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, and at this year’s ceremony, The Boy and the Heron by Hayao Miyazaki obtained this precious award. While most of the awards in this category have fallen into the hands of Disney and Pixar, it is clear that the market is ready for much more complex animated films, something that has always existed, but now on a much larger scale.
Currently, Miyazaki is already working on his next animated film for Studio Ghibli. For his part, del Toro continues to advance his adaptation of Frankenstein. On related topics, Guillermo del Toro has called Alfonso Cuarón arrogant. Similarly, del Toro and Christopher Nolan talk about the physical average.
Author’s Note:
If anyone can talk about animation and the work of Studio Ghibli in the West, it is Guillermo del Toro. The director from Guadalajara has made clear the role that animation plays in the cinematographic world today, which deserves much more recognition.
